Program Overview

The Whitley County Adult Education Program offers educational instruction to adults of Whitley County.
Mission Statement
The goal of the Whitley County Adult Education Program is to break the cycle of under-education and poverty in Whitley County through an integrated education program of sufficient quality, intensity, and duration to move adults to self-sufficiency.  We believe that all individuals possess a potential for learning, and given the opportunity, are capable of achieving success.  By systematically addressing the educational needs of the community, Whitley County Adult Education seeks to assist adult learners in reaching their highest potentials and envisions a brighter future for the residents of Whitley County.
Target Population
Members of the working age population who lack high school or GED diplomas or who function below a twelfth grade education level are targeted for inclusion in the program.  Adults are encouraged to enroll in the program who need to earn GED Diplomas or who just want to enhance their levels of educational functioning.  The Whitley County Adult Education program will design instruction to accommodate the unique needs of each individual learner.
Method of Service Delivery
Adult learners are served according to their individual needs.  During an orientation session, students complete an enrollment form and instructors administer a Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) test to enrolling adult learners.  This test enables the instructors to determine the participants' functional educational levels and assists them in assigning initial academic units.
Also during the first day of class, instructors conference with adult learners to assist them in setting goals they hope to achieve during the program year.  Instructors are able to offer adult learners one-on-one instruction during class times.  At the end of fifty hours of instruction, adult learners take a progress test to assess their current educational functional levels.  Tests utilized to assess performance include the TABE, Pre-GED, and the Official GED.
